De Spits February 2004: Dutch wine writer Janna Rijpma visits Rives-Blanques and is seduced by its wines
Dutch wine writer and journalist, Janna Rijpma, braved rain, wind and bitter cold to come and visit us for the daily Dutch paper De Spits. A good sport, she endeared herself by taking in all the finer points of the taille gobelet while standing knee-deep in mud, braced against the biting wind like a mariner in mid-storm, without a single word of protest. Here are some of the things she said about our wines:...It's only when you've had a sip of the Blanquette de Limoux from Rives-Blanques that you realise how unexpectedly good and delicious this sparkler can be ... the hot sun and cooling winds there allow the grape to fill itself up with the goodness of the earth ... apart from its refreshing acidity, the wine is soft and juicy, brimful of citrus. 10% chardonnay-chenin gives extra roundness. That Jan and Caryl are not afraid of venturing out and doing new things is shown by their 100% barrel-vinified Mauzac, which has a welcome new fresh style. Their wines are being talked about locally, and being praised internationally. Even their 'ordinary' basic wine - 100% chardonnay - which I call the 'basic beauty' makes a huge impression. We can be proud of these enterprising Dutch wine makers in the lap of the French lion..." Last Updated: 2004/02/01
